Yesterday, Gloria Steinem appeared on Oprah wearing leather pants and a low cut blouse. No, this is not a joke, and yes, she had on a bra.
Gloria is such a powerful force reminding us of what we have been and what we can be. The definitions of feminism have certainly changed. The shock value of women burning their bras was a necessity in the 60s. Radical change is rarely passive. But, today we are allowed to be woman...sexy even (shocker), yet still press on with the cause.
She looks great! And, yes, I think it is OK to say that. How inspirational is it that a hard core feminist can be sexy.
Is this change in feminism due to a natural shift in the playing field (power)? Where we once had to go onto the man's court and make our presence known - we now have a court of our own. Is it where it should be - no. We still have a long way to go. Yet, we now have the ability to play our own game rather than trying to beat a man at his own.
As a woman caught between societies definition of pretty and powerful, I am once again reminded by Gloria that we can be both. No need to burn the bra, wear it because you need it!
