The concept of tortoise hibernation in refrigerators is the brainchilled idea of Shirley Neely, employed at the Tortoise Sanctuary in New Jersey.
The tortoises hibernate for up to three months during the winter, in temperatures that are easily maintained by typical fridges.
Usually the Tortoises are wrapped on a sea salt drenched cloth. But for the sake of photography, they are shown here unwrapped.
Refrigerator doors are opened daily to allow fresh air to enter the hibernation chamber.

This is fascinating. I tried to adopt a rescie turtle for my son but the organization refused to let me. They said that there was too of a chance of Salmonilla. Does anyone know if this is true?
